April 24 : Blood of the soil sucking continuously: Yellappa Reddy

Hosanagara, April. 24- Blood (fertility) of the soil has been continuously sucking in the name of science, technology and green revolution, well known environmentalist and retired secretary of forest department Yellappa Reddy has lamented.
He was addressing the fourth day session on the subject cow, agriculture and environment at Ramachandrapur Math near here on the occasion of world conference on Indian breed cattle on Tuesday.
Fertility of the soil has been continuously exploited since 50 years. As a result fertile land becoming sterile, he said.
Food items becoming poisonous due to over usage of chemical fertilizers which affects badly on our health. Resort Companies started to purchase traditional grass lands. One day in future nature could be destroyed, if the trend continues, he warned. Adding, usage of cows’ discards could enhance the fertility of the land, he suggested.

Speaking on the occasion agriculture expert Narayana Reddy said, the leaders who should become active for fighting against the bad effects of the usage of chemical fertilizers were becoming separated in the name of organic and zero capital farming. 60 years back, percentage of carbon in soil in Deccan plateau was 3 per cent. Now, it decreases to meager 0.4 per cent due to over usage of chemical fertilizers, he lamented.
Fertility of the soil decreasing day by day due to interference of human activities. On the other hand traditional cultivation diminishing due to increasing concentration on Industrilisation. These things converts farming into a problem, he criticized.
Farmer is not a real farmer if he does not rear even a single cow. Land never became sterile and we can increase the fertility of the land by using cows’ discards, he added.
