April 22: Declare cow as national animal: Rama Jois

Ramachandrapur Math(Hosanagar), April. 22 -
Former Bihar Governor Justice Rama Jois has urged the union government to declare cow as national animal with immediate effect.
Presiding over the second day session at the world conference on Indian breed cattle here on Sunday he said, cow slaughter should be banned in the country and a bill in this regard be introduced in the parliament soon, he added.
There is a option in the 48th act of the Indian constitution for banning cow slaughter completely in the country. Supreme Court had upheld the same in a verdict in 2005. So far, only some states have banned the cow slaughter, but, it should be extended to all the States and union government should bring an act in this regard, he said.
He also urged the government to declare the cow as national animal with immediate effect.
Meanwhile, receiving the 'best cowherd' award conferred by the Math, well known environmentalist M B Kumaraswamy said, in western countries cows have been utilised for preparing mutton and milk. But, in India cow is worshiped as god.
Adding, in India we can see the 30 varieties of cattle breed. 36,000 slaughter houses were registered in India and scores of cows have been killed in these slaughter houses every day, he lamented.
While gracing the occasion Shree Raghaveshwar Bharathi Swamiji said, according to our constitution not even a single innocent should be punished. But, in our country hundreds of cows have been killed every day for no guilty for their own, he lamented. According to 1947 census, there was 1430 cows for every 1000 person. But, now it comes down to 210. Their numbers could have been increased 20 per cent to human population, if we allow them to natural death instead of killing them in slaughter houses, he added.
Assam Shree Kamakya Peeta Acharya Mahamandaleshwari Divya Yogamayananda Saraswathi Swamiji, Kolkata mahadeva rushipeeta Acharya Mahavijaya Yogi Swamiji, Bollywood actor Vivek Oberai and others were present on the occasion.
